A long hike to move around after the holiday stupor. We're doing the entire North/South Trail which is 8.7 km/5.4 miles.
We're leaving from the South entrance early in the morning to find all sorts of amazing July wildflowers: meadowbeauties, grass pinks, butterfly peas, butterfly orchids, tarflower, Florida milkweed, partridge pea, candyroots, and milkworts. Led by Nathalie Van Turnhout, this two mile hike will feature lake 2 and the area just to the south of it. Sunset is at 6:52, so nice 'golden-hour' light for photographers!
Led by Nathalie Van Turnhout this 3.5 mile hike starts just after sunrise (7:28) and will go the forest's namesake, The Split Oak. It will also pass by lake 1 and the large cypress dome.
There's a reason why people steal orchids - they're gorgeous. We will be looking for the Orange Fringed Orchids (Platanthera ciliaris) that sometimes come up around the sawgrass marsh in the year of and the year after a burn. Route 6.7 miles. Cover photo by jtalbert04 CC BY-NC 4.0
Finally our beautiful and overgrown sandhills were burned this summer, one in June and one in July. This hike will be at 75 Days Post Burn for Unit 19A and 44 days post-burn for Unit 23. Meet @ the main entrance. Route: 4.75km/3.95mi including sections of the Florida Trail, North/South Trail, and County Line Trail.
